02/01 | Welcome to the first day of class!!! I will talk about structure of the class and answer any questions that come up, then we will cover the following topics: 1.1 Introduction to equations 1.2 Combining like terms Online resources: I will not be reviewing fractions: how to write equivalent fractions, how to add/multiply/divide/subtact/simplify fractions. If you need a refresher, visit this resource: https://openstax.org/books/intermediate-algebra-2e/pages/1-3-fractions Here are the video recordings from our class meeting: 1) Introductions + class structure 2) Covering Sections 1.1 and 1.2 from zyBooks |
HW 01, due Monday, February 8th, 11:59 pm at WeBWorK Few notes: * start working on the homewors as soon as possible after our class meeting. Do not delay it, do not set it aside, do not start working on your homework on the due date! * Please note that if you try to submit an answer at 11:59pm, it might not be accepted by the WeBWorK as time on your computer and time at WeBWorK server might slightly differ! * If you have a question about a problem at WeBWorK, hit the "Email Instructor" button at the bottom of the page of the problem. * Although MathQuil, that helps enter fractions, exponents, etc., is enabled for our class, see the cheat sheet for the correct syntax for entering answers in WeBWorK if you do not want to use MathQuil WeBWorK Cheatsheet for Students Ver2.pdf |

Class meeting plan:
topic: 1.3 Linear equations Update from Thursday, Feb. 4th on what did we do at our meeting: 1) We went over these problems for practice. Here is the video recording. 2) Then we had a KAhoot! quiz which was based on the material from Section 1.3 This was a training quiz and the results will not be counted towards your grade ... unless I decide to use them as extra points. 3) We didn't have time for our second part of the practice and these problems I did not cover with you in class. I plan to show you two examples from this set in our next class meeting on Monday (the ones with "no solutions" and "infinitely many solutions"). The rest I leave for you to look over. All these examples employ fractions. HW 02, problems 9-16 are dealing with this type of questions. Here are the solutions to most of the second part questions: problem 1, problem 2, problem 3, problem 4, problem 8, problem 9, problem 10 Additional online resources: 1) Here is a whole chapter of short videos and guided practices from Khan Academy 2) Sal from Khan Academy solves the literal equations ax+3x=bx+5 and a(5-x)=bx-8 for x (video, ~5 mins long) 3) Sal from Khan Academy rewrites the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle so it is solved for width (video, ~7 mins long) |
